A new community health center in Ward 4

One of the interesting findings in our recent Census issue brief was the expansion of the Hispanic community beyond its traditional core in Ward 1, where it actually decreased by 12%. In particular, Ward 4 has seen the largest influx in Hispanic residents over the past decade, with a 54% increase or 5,000 residents.

The Census 2010 numbers have been coming out over the past few weeks, unleashing the usual torrent of stories looking back on how our country has changed over the last decade. The Census tracts for the District are not expected to come out until late this month or early March, but we can already make some basic predictions with confidence. The District is a much more diverse place than ever -- the Census numbers will reflect the city's increasing Hispanic population and diminishing black majority.

Well, I hate to admit it, but when the Census Bureau released staggering new figures on rising child poverty last week, I was worlds away on a long-planned trip with my family in of all places, Paris, France.

Yesterday the Census Bureau released new figures revealing deepening poverty across America. One in seven, or 44 million, Americans live in poverty, and the number of children living in poverty is at the highest point since the Census began tracking this data -- one in five children, or 15 million.
