DCPS out-of-boundary Pre-K lottery is now open!
If you have a preschool aged-child and live in the District, note that the lottery period for DCPS Pre-K (3- and 4-year-olds) is now open. It's time to shop around and find a school that works best for you and your child.
Here's more information on the lottery process: http://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/
(Looks like there may be some technical problems at the moment with the application, but don't worry. The lottery runs through February 28 to complete and submit the application -- and there is no benefit to submitting it early -- aside from peace of mind!)
If you have seen the bus ads around town advertising "The New Pre-K" at DCPS, you may be wondering what it is all about. The New Pre-K, which encompasses what were both traditional preschool and Pre-K classrooms, is a comprehensive early childhood education approach based on the best of what works from the Head Start model. Children in these classrooms will receive full health and developmental screenings and benefit from "family style" meals in the classroom, and help with potty training and teeth brushing. All of this is being made possible by a grant from the Federal Head Start bureau. We think it's a great program that's benefiting children of all income levels across the city.
If you have questions regarding the lottery process or just about Pre-K in DCPS, you can call the DCPS Critical Response Team at 202-478-5738, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Did you know that more than half of all children in DCPS attend schools outside of their neighborhoods? Something I learned today!
